We saw them appear last year and saw them featured on iPhon.fr. These are storage devices that can communicate with the WiFi iPad (or iPhone) to enable it to use the stored content (images, videos).

The limit of these solutions is related to the content that can be stored and used on the iPad, namely pictures, the videos (to the format) but not applications (must be installed on the iPad itself) or even content of apps like magazines for example.
The solutions all have their specificities in terms of number of clients connected, are generally compatible iPhone and iPad and even other smartphones. This can be useful for long trips to store movies for example.

Here is a list:
  • The iUSBPort tested by us here is a self-powered enclosure creating a wireless access point and connect to a USB drive, a hard drive to be accessed wirelessly from the iPad or iPhone
  • Seagate was one of the first to offer an iPhone-compatible external hard drive and iPad WiFi: theGoFlex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage , it is marketed here and available in 500 GB, we talked about it here
  • Transcend offers storage flash memory also with a capacity of 32 GB, it is sold here
Other solutions are also less conventional brands emerged:

The points will be watching before buying are the availability and functionality of the proposed applications to use the drive for iPad, monitoring them (regular updates) and of course the product brand for s' ensure the application including monitoring.
